We see the Light of the World…

…as we ask God to help us “put on the armor of light.” This collect alludes to Romans 13:12. However, in what way does light function as armor? Light has no matter in which to deflect any physical weapon. Paul, continuing in verse 14, enjoins us to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ” whose armor protects us from the desires of the flesh. The true light, Christ, dispels the darkness of sin and empowers the Christian to “walk properly as in the daytime” (verse 13).

As missionaries—indeed, as Christians—we are called to bring the light (armor) of Christ into a world of darkness. Isaiah encourages us to “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you. And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising” (60:1-3).

Lord, may the true light of Christ shine through us, scattering the darkness of sin and drawing all nations and peoples to behold your glory.
