David and Lucy Chaves, SAMS Missionaries to Kenya
I see the Light of the World …
… through the lives of the children in Chakama Village in Kilifi County, Kenya. Jesus said in Matthew 18:3-5: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven…” The children in Chakama are the poorest of the poor, they barely get a meal per day, yet they are always filled with hope and Joy. They are often running around with smiles and laughter, a stark contrast of the environment they live in.
A few weeks ago I had delivered some school shoes to the Children, their feet were so caked with mud that we felt their was a need to wash their feet, the shock of what we saw still lingers in my mind, there was no single foot that didn’t have several holes on the sole. We had to perform some minor surgery and remove a badly damaged nail on one of the kids. But how could they be so joyful? It is then that I realized that in their little lives, they live each day in great dependance on God and not in their ability to meet their need, they are often eager to learn more about him, they do not whine and complain, and it looks to me that they bear no grudge or unforgiveness. These little ones live in the light of Christ and are thankful for each day.
How I pray that I might be more childlike as I grow older, that the light of Christ may shine in me in the strength of humility, forgiveness and Joy.
